Match the cutter to the cable size
General labels each cutter by the cables it fits, for example "for 3/8" & 1/2" cables" or "for 5/8" and 3/4" cables". Sectional heads are labeled for 1-1/4" cables. In our parts finder, each machine page lists the cutters that match the cable sizes on its parts list, marked Configuration required because they depend on the cable you actually run.

What each head is for
- Arrow head (AH): a first pass through a stoppage to open it up.
- U-cutters (for example 2UC): scrape grease and buildup off the pipe wall after the line is open.
- Root rippers and saw blades (RP-2, 3RSB, G-RP-2, G-4HDB): cutting roots in larger lines.
- Retrieving tools: pulling out rags, toys and loose objects.
Counter tip: Start with a smaller head to open the line, then go up in size to clean the wall. A cutter that is too big for the pipe can bind the cable.
Cutters for other brands’ cables
General also makes cutters for other manufacturers’ cables. They are labeled "Compatible with" Ridgid, Electric Eel or Spartan cables. Those fit by that brand’s cable and connector, so they do not appear as fits for General machines in our finder.
Questions we get
Will a Mini-Rooter cutter fit a Speedrooter cable?
No. The MRCS set is for 3/8" and 1/2" cables. Speedrooter cables are 5/8" and 3/4", which take cutters like the SRCS set.
